Introduction

In the business world, above-average employees with leadership potential must be competent in five basic communication skills. Every leader, from the president of the United States to the assembly-line supervisor at an automobile plant, must be able to read, write, speak, think, and listen at advanced levels. By mastering these five communication skills, managers enhance their interaction with employees and business contacts to form a positive and productive environment for success.

Five-tool managers— those who read quickly, critically, and comprehensively; who write with speed and clarity; who present their ideas in an understandable manner; who are always one or two steps ahead in their thought processes; and who listen actively and em pathetically —are highly prized and sought-after. Occasionally, such a person will be identified while toiling away at a non-supervisory job. But the odds of finding such a diamond in the rough are nearly the same as visiting a sandlot baseball field in Alabama and spotting the next Willie Mays.
