Common Mistakes in English


People who use English as a Second Language (ESL) often fail to distinguish between words that are homophones (pronounced the same) but have different meanings. Also, they often tend to pronounce and use some common words/phrases without having the knowledge of their proper meanings and usage. Keeping these things in mind, this workshop has been designed for participants to have a clear understanding in the type of common mistakes they make in daily conversation so they can avoid miscommunication.

Program Objectives:
This workshop is extremely useful for those who have basic knowledge in English and are willing to get a better understanding in the correct usage of English words and phrases in terms of proper meaning, forms, stress, intonation etc. By the end of the session, learners will be able to:
- successfully distinguish between homophones (two different words pronounced the same) and/or homographs (two different words spelled the same)
- successfully distinguish between nouns and verbs that often create misunderstandings, e.g. advice and advise
- learn correct pronunciation of words that are often mispronounced, e.g. said, which should be pronounced- /sed/ (not /seid/)
- learn some useful phrases that are essential in daily conversation
- demonstrate their understanding through different interactive activities

A blended Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task-Based Method (TB) shall be used in the session to ensure communication and demonstration of understanding (of learners) on the subject matter. The following types of activities shall be used in the given session:
Group work
Question-answer sessions (each individual will be questioned by other participants in turn)
Use of multimedia (powerpoint presentation for better understanding and discussion with examples)
Instant feedback: T-Ss, Ss-S and vice versa will be ensured
Short quiz


Interactive lecture, PowerPoint Presentation, individual & group work, feedback session etc.

Contents of Training:

Ice-breaker (spot the similarities): speaking activity in pairs
Learners will work in pairs on some pictures. The activity will engage learners to describe the picture they are holding (two pictures for a pair with some similarities) to their partner. Trainer will observe each pair and occasionally correct their pronunciation and grammar.

Activity-1: PowerPoint presentation-1
Complete powerpoint presentation will be made in 3 parts with hands-on activities to be done in the middle so it doesn’t get monotonous. Trainer will discuss about some common phrases and words to distinguish their meanings and usage. Trainer will also encourage participants to engage in discussion.

Activity-1: Group work, Interactive game
Learners will work in groups of 3 or 4. TRAINER will label each group with a letter, e.g. group A, group B etc. Each group will be provided with a worksheet (different for each group) where they will see some sentences containing mistakes (sentences will be easy but misleading). All the members in the groups will discuss and correct each sentence on the sheet. Once all the groups have done it, Trainer will ask each group to say the sentences they have (with mistakes). One member can read out one sentence in turn. While one group members are reading their sentences, other groups will listen and try to correct the sentence orally. The group that corrects the sentence first will get one point (Trainer will write the points on the board). The group getting the highest number of marks will be declared the winner.

This presentation will cover more examples of common mistakes and tips to avoid them. Pronunciation tips may also be given.

Motivational activity
Trainer will give each learner a blank sheet. Each learner will write his/her name at the top of the sheet and leave it at their desk. Now each learner will stand up and go to other learners’ sheet in turn (except their own) and write a good thing about that learner (a learner may guess in case s/he doesn’t know the learner s/he is writing about). This way all the learners will get a number of sentences praising them. Trainer will ask each learner to read out the sentences they have got. Trainer will correct pronunciation and sentence formation if mistaken. Trainer must make sure that the learner know that they will have to write only the good things about other learners.
